Following guidance from our Head Office who acknowledge the Government's plan to delay the epidemic peak, they have made an assessment that the well being and safety of our members (many of whom fall into the high-risk category) is likely to benefit from Societies taking active measures to reduce the risk of the virus spreading in a potentially vulnerable group of people.

Our committee have therefore reached the unfortunate but inevitable decision to cancel our next two lectures: Tantrums and Tiaras - April 8th

Rococo Silver and the adventures of its owners and makers - May 13th

In addition our forthcoming trip to Dumfries house on the 3rd June, 2020 has also been cancelled.

We do apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you. At this time, we cannot predict how this pandemic will progress but we promise to keep you informed of any further cancellations.

If you are interested in learning more about the arts, or in helping us conserve our heritage, or just want to make new friends who also enjoy fascinating lectures, visiting galleries and interesting days out, then "The Arts Society Appleby-in-Westmorland" might be for you. We welcome new members, so please look at our "joining page" for details on how you can become a member.

Last year we changed our name from "The Westmorland Decorative and Fine Arts Society" to "The Arts Society Appleby-in Westmorland" This name change is in line with the decision made at our National AGM in May 2017. Members felt that "The Arts Society" is a name and brand that more clearly represents who we are and what we do. It is also seen by many within the organisation as a logical and natural progression from the previous lengthy and opaque name. It communicates more accurately the broad nature of the lecture topics which now incorporate all the arts and makes a strong statement about the organisations role in the community and wider society.

Our branch was formed in 1993 and we currently have over 100 members. We meet at Appleby Public Hall on the second Wednesday of every month at 11 am (except in our summer break of June, July and August). In addition to the monthly lecture schedule we also offer members a varied programme of guided visits to galleries, museums and historic buildings. We also have one or two residential tours per year. This year, 2018 we are visiting Venice in March and Birmingham in October.

If you are already a member, then please keep up with our news by regularly visiting this page.

We have changed our lecture feedback system so that you now enter a password rather than your email address. We should have supplied you with one. If not or if you have forgotten it please contact us.
